We Sing with Our Hearts and Our SoulsHeart & Soul is an mixed-voice chorale of approximately 16 singers under the direction of Paul Hurst. The repertoire ranges from Baroque to contemporary, including spiritual, Broadway and Big Band. The group sings at corporate and civic events throughout the Bay area. Heart & Soul was honored to sing for the Holiday Candlelight Tour in the East Room of the White House and at dedication ceremonies for the Foster City Library and the Senior Center. The group is available for entertainment at corporate, service club or private functions, with a program customized to the occasion. The name Heart & Soul expresses the the feeling that we, as amateur singers, sing with both our hearts and our souls. And because we do, we are committed to offering our best musically. The name reflects something tangible (our hearts) and something intangible (our souls). The reasons and benefits we enjoy singing are often internal and difficult to describe but the results of our efforts are real to ourselves and our audience. While Heart & Soul is based in Foster City, the volunteer singers represent communities throughout the San Francisco Peninsula and the East Bay. Participation is by audition. While the group performs throughout the year, rehearsal seasons are January through early May and September through early December. Registration is at the beginning of each season but the singers are expected to join for the year. Each season culminates in a public concert. The spring season features secular pieces and the fall season emphasizes holiday pieces for Christmas and Hannukah. Heart & Soul is cosponsored by the Foster City Parks and Recreation Department and the nonprofit Peninsula Musical Arts Association. Its financial support comes from participation fees from the singers, concert ticket sales, and proceeds from corporate and private performances. |

How do I join? |

Heart & Soul welcomes and encourages singers of all musical backgrounds to audition. Auditions are held the first rehearsal of each new season (January and August), or by appointment. To be eligible to audition for Heart & Soul, you must sing with the Foster City Community Chorus for at least one season. We understand that the very idea of an audition can be terrifying, so we do our very best to provide a relaxed and comfortable auditioning process. The audition is not competitive. It is simply designed to evaluate your tone quality, range and musical ability. There is no need to prepare a song... just come as you are, and we'll provide the rest. You will meet with the Musical Director and will be asked to sing a few scales, repeat some rhythmic patterns, match a few pitches played on the piano, and try your hand at basic sight-reading. Heart & Soul rehearses Monday evenings from 7:15 p.m. to 9:45 p.m., at Audubon School, 841 Gull Avenue, in Foster City. What does it cost? |

PMAA collects participation fees as a means to help finance our overall operational expenses and performances. These fees also remind us that we are making an investment in PMAA with both our time and our money. Participation fees are $120 per 14-16 week season. |
