Peninsula Choruses Offer
A Winter CelebrationDownload the concert poster
Peninsula music lovers will have an opportunity to hear the Foster City Community Chorus and Heart & Soul perform their 19th annual winter concert, “A Winter Celebration,” with harp and hand bells at 3 p.m. on Saturday, December 5, and Sunday, December 6. The concert will be performed at Transfiguration Episcopal Church, 3900 Alameda de las Pulgas, San Mateo.
This festive concert by the combined choruses of the Peninsula Musical Arts Association will feature a medieval Christmas ceremony with more contemporary music after the intermission celebrating the winter season of Hanukah and Yule. Works included are the complete “A Ceremony of Carols” for choir and harp by Benjamin Britten and choral works by Ralph Vaughn Williams, Maurice Duruflé, Jan Pieters Sweelinck, Alice Parker, Joseph Haydn, plus a world premier composed by Paul H. Hurst. The Hillsdale Methodist Hand Bell Choir will be featured in songs such as “Sleigh Bells,” “Christmas Bell Carol,” “Joy to the World,” and “Ring Those Christmas Bells” and an audience sing-along of Handel’s Hallelujah Chorus.
In existence since 1993, the two groups have performed across the country in
recent years, including performances of Haydn’s The Creation in Dallas and Handel’s
Messiah at Carnegie Hall. Future performances are being planned for Washington, D.C., in 2011 and West Coast performances in the summer of 2010.
This is the fifth season under the direction of the multi-talented musician/composer Paul Hurst, who not only teaches voice, music theory, harp, and piano, but Mr. Hurst has performed internationally on harp and piano and has accompanied some of the most famous entertainers in Las Vegas. His extensive musical theater experience includes over 55 productions in the Bay Area and Southern California, and he has directed 15 shows, coached choruses, conducted orchestras and a community chorus in Los Angeles.
